A Hot Take on Self-Care | The Kitchen Sink Series

Has self-care morphed from a common-sense health movement to a toxic expression of consumer culture designed to shame, not heal?

The Kitchen Sink Series from Slow Folk is a raw and imperfect podcast for rabble-rousers, dawdlers, late-bloomers and taboo-breakers, thirsty for a slower life in a world obsessed with speed.

Unscripted and unedited - straight from my kitchen sink.

Sharing some protective Mama Bear energy in this episode as I react to a social media influencers Instagram post about self-care - specifically her thoughts about what ‘doesn’t count’ as self care.

What if this new, modern, consumerist version of ‘self-care’ is actually causing more harm than good?

How nurturing can something really be if it’s become just one. more. thing. on your ever-expanding to do list?

If you’re made to feel shame for doing it ‘wrong’?

If it’s only accessible to those with heaps of time, money and childcare?

What if, instead, we reframed our expectations, set aside our ego and asked more beautiful questions?

How might our perspective and our feelings about both our lives and our selves shift if we let go of our sense of entitlement?

If we learned to find joy and gratitude in the daily, mundane acts that actually contribute to our well-being?

If we recognized that self-care doesn’t have to be bought? That it doesn’t have to involve fancy face rollers or trips to the spa or unloading our kids?

That sometimes, in some seasons, simply getting out of bed and finally dragging a brush through our hair is a momentous act of self-care, worthy of celebration, not to be dismissed?

It’s time to get back to a concept of self-care that is rooted in true healing and a better relationship with the tough parts of life - from death to dirty laundry.
