Welcome to the Unbusy Revolution

Slow Folk is a community for rabble-rousers, dawdlers, late-bloomers and taboo-breakers, thirsty for a slower life in a world obsessed with speed.

Heya, I’m Stacey, the voice behind Slow Folk. I’m here to write for humans - not algorithms - to ask more beautiful questions, and to sow seeds of joyful rebellion against the relentless pursuit of more.

I’ve spent the last 10+ years exploring what it means to apply Slow values to REAL life - you know - the one with deadlines and bills and soccer practices and the never-ending pile of laundry.

I write about the space where radical slow living, motherhood, creativity and entrepreneurship collide.

Over that time I’ve unearthed a few unexpected truths about slow living :

Number One - Slow living isn’t about doing everything at a snail’s pace, wearing nothing but linen or selling everything and moving to a farm in the English countryside (as lovely as that sounds).

It’s about finding the proper pace, le tempo giusto, for YOU.

Number Two - There is no right or wrong way to ‘do’ it (no matter what the IG influencers try to tell you). Take what speaks to you and leave the rest to the rest.

Number Three - Slowness isn’t a destination. It’s just a toolkit. A set of skills, habits, beliefs, values, mindsets and beautiful questions that help us find our feet and catch our breath when the speed of the world leaves us breathless.

Slow living doesn’t have to be an esoteric idea, or just for folks with time and money to live a life of leisure.

The people who can most benefit from slowness are those of us living in the trenches of busy; regular people struggling to balance work, parenting, family, our health and social expectations in a world obsessed with too much, too fast.

It doesn’t have to be One. More. Thing. on your already overflowing plate.

It’s not a to-do list.

You can’t do it wrong.

I’m not a woman of leisure. Although some elements of my life look like a cliché Slow life here on the farm - for the most part I’m just a regular soccer mum.

I struggle with all the same things other parents do -

  • How to protect my kids without consigning them to a life of social outcasts or being overwhelmed by mom-guilt.

  • Trying to get to the end of the month before the end of the money in a region with one of the highest costs of living in the world.

  • Lying awake at night worrying about the climate and my family’s future in a hurting and broken world.

  • How to reduce the negative impact of technology on our wellbeing.

  • How to manage the demands of a household - laundry, bills, where are the dang soccer cleats!, relationships, housework, getting food on the table between lacrosse and soccer practice, building a career and all the rest.

Slowness simply helps us do it with more grace, intention and joy.

At the core - Slow Living is simply a means of asking more beautiful questions.

  • What do I want to do with my one wild and precious life?

  • Is this my highest point of contribution?

  • Do I need or even want this thing / habit / activity / obligation / value in my life?

  • What is the cost of allowing this into my life? Does the cost outweigh the benefit?

  • What do I have to set down in order to say yes to this other thing?

  • How can I be of service and present and alive to my own life?

  • What makes me feel alive?

About Stacey

Stacey is a writer, renegade farmer and reluctant homemaker living and working on a historic five acre farm in Canada’s Fraser Valley. In 2010 Stacey ditched her office-with-a-view in the city to turn her attention homeward, farm and help others craft a simple life, from scratch.

Stacey is a Certified Master Organic Gardener, formally-trained printmaker, community activist and business mentor. She’s passionate about food sovereignty, the importance of rootedness, place and community in an unmoored world and the power of individual, daily choices to change - everything.

When she’s not writing or farming, you’ll find her making a mess of the kitchen, cheering at her kids’ games, painting or learning to play the piano for the first time at 41!
